District 53 - Fulton County & Cobb County

About Representative Sheila Jones

State Representative Sheila Jones is the representative for House District 53, which includes portions of Fulton and Cobb counties; and was sworn into office on January 10, 2005. She serves on several committees such as the House Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Juvenile Justice and Transportation committees. She has also served as Vice-chair of the Rail Subcommittee for the Transportation Committee.

Before her election to the House, Sheila served as the legislative representative for the Georgia State Council of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Union AFL-CIO. In this role, she represented more than 9,000 working men and women throughout the state of Georgia. She also met with both state and national lawmakers to discuss issues affecting working families (such as the minimum wage, unemployment benefits, and workers compensation).

After 34 years of distinguished service she retired from Lockheed Martin. While employed at Lockheed Martin, Sheila was an active member and still affiliates with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union AFL-CIO Local Lodge 709. She held several leadership positions including:

  •  Shop Steward
  •  Grand Lodge Convention Delegate
  •  Women’s Convention Delegate
  •  Bylaws Committee Chair
  •  Legislative Committee
  •  Executive Board (where she was the Union’s first female trustee)

She has been a member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia Board, Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, National Council of Negro Women, and the Sierra Club. She was elected twice to represent the state of Georgia at the Democratic National Convention. She is an executive committee member of the Fulton County Democratic Party and a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Atlanta Alumnae Chapter.

As a State Representative, Sheila works with veterans, senior citizens, youth, and constituents in her district. Having hosted numerous town hall meetings over the years, Representative Jones has met with and heard from her many of her constituents on various issues. Some of her work in her community includes school supplies to students and teachers, hosting health fairs, breakfast for senior citizens, recognizing the teacher of the year, as well as graduating students and giving out holiday food baskets.
